Academic Mentorship

John’s educational philosophy is not just to teach a particular subject, but also to help the student in all aspects of his or her education. While the first priority for mentoring is helping the student learn required material, it would be a disservice to the student if the mentor did not help the student engage in that student’s own interests – you never know where those interests might lead. Education does not exist in a vacuum, and success in that arena often follows success in other aspects of life. John understands that connection, and emphasizes that approach in his practice.

John was born and raised in Huntington Beach, CA., where he spent his childhood playing baseball and soccer, hanging out with friends, and causing trouble for his parents. High school was when John’s passion for science was ignited by his teachers; while he didn’t realize it at the time, John had fantastic teachers. After high school John attended the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. Majoring in geology, he enjoyed working in remote areas of the wilderness. While earning his B.S., John had the opportunity to help teach geology lab classes. This led John to pursue more teaching opportunities, and he moved to Las Vegas after graduation to teach high school science.

In John’s free time he enjoys a variety of different hobbies. He enjoys using experimental procedures to develop new meals for his families and experimenting with flavor combinations. John enjoys being outside in nature and deciphering the different landscapes to determine how they came to be. In his spare time, you might find John working on his Jeep and using it to travel into remote areas. He also enjoys Star Wars, reading, teaching his young son, and baseball.
