River Tony is a writer, translator, and script consultant with over three years of classroom and tutoring experience. After earning a B.A. in East Asian Studies from the University of Michigan, River’s passion for language and other cultures led them to pack their bags and chart a course to Japan. There, they put their nose to the books at Stanford’s premiere language school, passed the JLPT N1 (the highest level proficiency test for non-native speakers), and achieved their dream of translating video games for English audiences. Now in Los Angeles, they’ve transitioned into writing their own stories and helping students write theirs.
Having juggled the full IB curriculum alongside multiple extracurriculars, River knows just how daunting the added stress of college essays can be. Moreover, after years of highly structured academic writing, being asked to self-reflect, write in their own voice, and present themselves holistically in x-amount of words can seem like a foreign concept. By acting as a supportive and empathetic mentor, River aims to equip students with the confidence to write authentically and chase their dreams.
When River isn’t mentoring students, they can be found playing board games, going on hikes, developing their award-winning sci-fi pilot, or tinkering away at their first interactive Twine game.
