With a decade of experience in education, Brian discovered early on that he deeply enjoys personalizing the art of teaching. He got his start tutoring biology at Gavilan College as a high school student, where he learned to cater to a variety of learning styles and age groups while maintaining the rigor of a fairly difficult subject. Although he does love biology – and has great affinity for history, English, language arts, and other elements of a classic high school regimen – Brian found his academic calling in mathematics, having graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a B.S. in the subject (and a minor in history). Thereafter, he has worked as a teacher and tutor, gaining valuable experience coaching a diverse cast of students, from elementary math competitors to AP high school students.

From each of these tests to his teaching, Brian has successfully grown and allowed them to enhance the fundamental patience, warmth, and attentiveness that govern his unique style of mentorship. In particular, he loves fostering long-term relationships with his students and helping them achieve their goals, both in an academic sense and in a general social-emotional sense. In this way Brian sees education as a holistic entity that must be approached from and informed by the rest of a student’s life and emotional perspective. It’s this that excites him about each and every student.

Brian’s colleagues often describe him as personable, genuine, and diligent, with a good sense of humor and always open to feedback and growth. He’s had many hobbies over the years, but on his present list is reading and writing, through which enjoys honing the art of language. Additionally, he loves being active, often by hiking scenic vistas in Monterey, Santa Rosa, and Half Moon Bay, and on occasion through pickleball and tennis.
