Essay Coaching

Steve has enjoyed helping students develop clear and effective writing for several years. As a professor at Fordham University for three years, he has had the pleasure of assisting students in refining their persuasive writing and literary interpretation skills. Steve is also a substitute English teacher at the Dalton School in New York City, where he enjoys having discussions about literature and society with high schoolers of all grades. Before teaching, he guided students at Fordham University’s writing center in outlining, planning, and revising assignments across the curriculum and helped students with other writing genres like application essays for internships and graduate schools, grant proposals, and creative projects. Steve earned his Ph.D. in English and American Literature from Fordham University and has published research on early American and early Caribbean literature. His dissertation explores the emotional and psychological dimensions of fishing and empire in the early Americas.

When working with students on their writing, Steve aims to cultivate ideas, stories, and styles that are unique to each student. Drawing from his experiences in journalism, he believes that asking key, provocative questions brings out the most compelling and nuanced writing from everyone. Since he has worked with many students through the years, Steve knows that each person approaches the writing process differently—there is no one, cookie-cutter way to write. Because of that, Steve strives to understand the kind of brainstorming and writing activities that brings out the best in each student, all the while ensuring that his students are comfortable in the process along the way.

Outside of teaching and essay coaching, Steve enjoys reading and creative writing. He is also a translator of texts from Italian to English. Steve enjoys watching and playing sports with friends, and he is an avid fisherman and lover of the outdoors.
