Chen was born in Chengdu, China and is currently a Los Angeles based professional screenwriter and director. They have a B.A. in literary arts from Brown University and is currently enrolled in UCI’s M.F.A. in Fiction program. They were a writer on a Snapchat original series that received a 2022 NAACP Image Awards nomination and have been a Sundance screenwriting teacher. They were a 2023 Moonshot Initiative film fellow and pitched their TV series ideas to Netflix and HBO, among other companies.
Their proudest accomplishment is connecting with their students and establishing the type of relationship that enables them to succeed. They believe that they are fostering a life-long skillset that will not only be useful, but confidence-building and deeply fulfilling. As a professional writer, they not only understand but love the craft of writing, and it's their passion to inspire the same in their students. Their philosophy is that there is no perfect student, only ones with great potential. Their students have gone on to attend Brown, Harvard, Duke, UCLA, and UC Berkeley, among other schools. They've received the Scholastic Gold Key Award, a full scholarship to Amherst's summer writing program, a Fulbright fellowship, and attended the Yale Young Global Scholars program.
When not working with students or writing, they moonlight as a barista at their local boba joint - they’ll make you an osthmanthus oolong latte you’ll want to write home about.
