ESM’s Mentor Spotlight this month is focused on Jared Boddum, who has recently joined the team as a Language Mentor. Jared has been teaching languages for many years, and specializes in German, Mandarin, Italian, French, and Spanish.
As a mentor, Jared really enjoys offering ways of organizing and grouping pieces of linguistic information, as well as sharing tips and tricks to encourage pattern recognition. This allows students to break out of their routines and take ownership of the material. For Jared, tutoring is exciting because it offers a unique social context and platform to convey small heuristics and inspirations (for instance with language family similarities, cognates and verb conjugations) that would not be accessible online or in a book.
