I work with students who are preparing for the SAT, ACT, and PSAT. I also provide academic assistance for students in writing courses. I attended Kalamazoo College, a small midwestern liberal arts school, where I majored in philosophy and had the transformative experience of studying abroad in Latin America for a full academic year. After earning my undergraduate degree, I went on to complete an M.A. in South Asia Studies from the University of Pennsylvania, which I attended on a full merit scholarship. The plan was to do dissertation research in Pakistan. However, when I began my doctoral program in anthropology at the University of Chicago, I realized that my most burning questions had to do with the nature and value of intuition in the contemporary United States. I am now finishing my dissertation research on that topic, during which I have conducted fieldwork with psychologists, neuroscientists, countercultural institutions, and practitioners across the country. I use a question-based approach to tutoring, both as a diagnostic tool and as a way of engaging students and establishing deep understanding of the material. I like to treat my students as adults, just as my most effective and beloved teachers did with me. I think that building skills and strategies and clarifying key concepts in everyday language is equally if not more important than memorizing content, and I strive to build those skills collaboratively with students. I have a relaxed, personable demeanor and a wry sense of humor, which I hope makes tutoring not only edifying but also enjoyable. When I'm not tutoring or researching, I am most likely in the kitchen cooking something spicy, playing with my three moody cats, or climbing — a new passion I developed while getting to know climber-scientists during my research. I am a major music lover — 80s new wave, Hindi pop, punk rock, rock en español, experimental jazz — and I want your recommendations! When I have the chance, I try to get down to Baja California Norte, which is just a few hours south of my home in Los Angeles, for beautiful views, amazing food, and a chance to practice my Spanish.
