“Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.”

- Nelson Mandela

Pip grew up near Seattle, WA and was heavily influenced by the arts, performing as a ballet dancer, musician, and theater actor. As an undergraduate, Pip completed two separate degrees, one in philosophy and the other in global politics in just four years. She was honored as the outstanding graduating senior for the Philosophy Department, a Phi Beta Kappa Scholar, and as a College of Arts and Sciences highlight student for her graduating class. She did this while working multiple jobs, being an active member of the Visual, Literary, Performing Arts Council (for which she was later honored with an Arts Excellence Award), competing in the Ethics Bowl, dancing in the Elite Dance Company, and minoring in theater where she served as the Technical Director for the student theater group, STAGE.

Pip has lived in three different countries, on both sides of the Atlantic, and traveled Europe on her own. She has worked an eclectic range of jobs, from Seattle theater union technician to model, to field supervisor for a genetic research company, to greenhouse technician for the WSU Institute of Biological Chemistry, to airport rescue firefighter. To Pip, every new experience is a chance to learn and grow as a person. Her wide range of experiences allow her to better connect with her students and meet them where they are at.

After returning to the United States with her daughter, Ani, Pip completed her Ph.D. in political science with a focus on political psychology and international relations, while also completing a master’s in philosophy with a focus on applied ethics and just war theory. Her doctoral research into the changing face of white supremacy in the United States has greatly informed her perspectives both personally and professionally, motivating her to try and make a difference in her community.

Before joining the ESM Prep team, Pip spent nearly a decade teaching both philosophy and political science at Washington State University. She chose ESM Prep because of its values and holistic view of education. She too feels that each student is a unique individual with their own background, circumstances, strengths, and talents. Her teaching philosophy is based on mutual respect, compassion, and genuine curiosity about her students’ lives. In her down time, Pip enjoys spending time with her family, gardening, practicing yoga, and playing with her dog, Steve.
