An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.

Benjamin Franklin

Mary is a third culture kid, having spent her developmental years in three countries. Mary's tutoring experience began at the young age of 14 when her math teacher recognized her natural ability to teach. From there, she has spent over a decade teaching and tutoring students K through 12 in multiple academic subjects. In addition to academics, she gained several years of experience coaching students to prepare for the ACT, SAT, ISEE, and SSAT exams. She has worked with at-risk youth as well as students with mild-to-moderate learning differences and profound emotional trauma. She is skilled at supporting students with ADD, ADHD, mild-to-moderate dyslexia, and mild-to-moderate autism.

Mary received her undergraduate degree in biochemistry while also working as an undergraduate research assistant. Her work focused on using dielectric properties to quantify taste. Her love for research continued to manifest as she currently works as a neuroscience researcher with the Ronin Institute. Her work includes creating novel curricula at the intersection of philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience and creating machine learning algorithms to predict learning tasks. With this rich educational background, Mary is committed to offering each student an engaging and fun learning experience.

Mary believes lectures can be boring, but conversations are everything. It's with this mindset that she approaches learning as a dialogue between herself and her students. It brings her joy to see her students become more confident after learning material that they struggled with at first. She seeks not only to be a tutor but a mentor who guides her students to make long-term goals, assisting students to set their educational trajectory in the direction of their dreams.

When Mary is not teaching, she’s burying her nose in a book or planning her next international trip. You may also find her writing personal essays and science articles. Mary also has a rich performing arts background, having done musical theater, dancing, choir, and band in high school and having the opportunity to perform at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. She currently performs with the Los Angeles Symphonic Winds as a flutist.
